National was founded on August 27, 1947 by 24 independent car rental agents. It had grown from 60 sites in the United States in 1947 to more than 2000 international sites by 2005 [Update]. In 1995, National was an investment group that included William Lobeck of Tulsa, Alvin Swanner of New Orleans and Archer McWhorter of Houston.  Lobeck was a former president of Chrysler`s car rental and former owner of Thrifty Rent A Car, a competitor of National. It was then sold in 1995 at an estimated price of $1 billion.  In 1996, National was acquired by Republic Industries (later renamed AutoNation).  AutoNation relocated its car rentals in 2000 as ANC Rental.  AnC filed for bankruptcy a year later; The properties were sold in 2003 to Vanguard Automotive Group (controlled by Cerberus Capital Management).  On August 1, 7, 2007, Enterprise Rent-A-Car took control of the Vanguard automotive group.  National Car Rental is an American car rental agency based in Clayton, Missouri, USA. National is owned by Enterprise Holdings, as well as other agencies like Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Alamo Rent a Car. In 1996, National acquired the Canadian fleet and the operation of Tilden Rent-a-Car. In 1987, Paine Webber, an incumbent American brokerage firm, acquired the majority of National.
